What I Learned from Coders Who Travel

Over the past weeks, I have had the opportunity to participate in a transformative learning experience through Coders Who Travel Inc. (also known as The Coders Who Travel Foundation , an organisation led by CEO Afia Owusu-Forfie , with coaching support from Nah-Abiah A. and Angela Azumah Alu, PhD . This program has expanded my understanding of professional development, personal branding, and career readiness. In this blog, I reflect on the key lessons I learned and how they have shaped my confidence and preparedness for future opportunities. 

Building a Strong Resume 

One of the first skills we focused on was how to create a clear, effective, and professional resume. I learned the importance of tailoring my resume to specific roles rather than using a generic format. Our coaches emphasized structuring information so that hiring managers can quickly understand who I am, what I can do, and the value I bring. I also learned how to highlight my achievements instead of only listing responsibilities. This shift helped me think deeper about the impact of my past projects and experiences. 

Writing a Compelling Cover Letter 

We were also taught how to write a strong cover letter — something I previously found challenging. I learned that a cover letter is not just a formality but a personal introduction that connects my story to the role I am applying for. The coaches explained how to address the hiring manager professionally, how to showcase my motivation, and how to demonstrate that I understand the company I am applying to. Learning this skill has made me much more confident in expressing myself on paper. 

Creating and Optimising a LinkedIn Account 

Another major part of the training was building a professional presence online, especially on LinkedIn. I learned how to set up a complete profile, write a strong headline, and create a summary that reflects my goals and strengths. Afia, Nadia, and Dr. Angela also shared strategies for networking, connecting with industry professionals, and engaging with content in a way that builds credibility. This taught me that LinkedIn is not only a job search tool but a platform for long-term career growth. 

Mastering Interview Skills 

We also covered how to answer interview questions effectively. Through guidance and examples, I learned structured methods such as the STAR approach (Situation, Task, Action, Result), which helps me give clear, confident, and organised answers. We practised explaining our experiences, strengths, challenges, and goals in a way that shows professionalism. This training helped me understand that interviews are not only about answering questions but also about communicating positively, listening carefully, and showing readiness for opportunities. 

Leadership and Inspiration from the Coaches 

One of the most inspiring aspects of this program was the leadership style of Afia Owusu Forfie and the support from the co-coaches, Nadia and Dr. Angela. Their teaching went beyond technical skills — they also encouraged us to believe in ourselves, stay curious, and pursue continuous growth. Their dedication to supporting young people through technology and professional development has motivated me to push myself and aim higher. 

Conclusion 

My experience with Coders Who Travel has been truly impactful. The knowledge I gained — from resumes and cover letters to interviews and LinkedIn — has strengthened both my professional skills and my confidence. I now feel more prepared to engage with employers, present myself professionally, and take steps toward my future career. This program has not only taught me practical skills but has also inspired me to keep learning and building a strong foundation for my journey ahead.
