In mid-June 2025, I ( Bernard Kotey ) had the opportunity to participate in a virtual training organized by The Coders Who Travel Foundation . This training was hosted by Coders Who Travel, in collaboration with the Catholic University of Ghana, Sunyani Fiapre.
Honestly speaking and without a doubt, I see it as a personal career boost delivered right to my screen, which gives me an in-depth knowledge of the job market. My sincere thanks go to these amazing organizers: Ms. Afia Owusu-Forfie , Dr. Angela Azumah Alu, PhD , and Mrs. Nah-Abiah A. and to not forget, Prof. Daniel Obeng-Ofori (the Vice-Chancellor for Catholic University of Ghana). These people know their stuff and packed so much value into the sessions.
The breakdown of what we learnt and how it was so helpful is as follows:1. A Deep Dive into Resume Critique by Dr. Angela Azumah Alu, PhD : Dr. Angela Azumah Alu didn't just skim the surface of how to write your resume. We were able to explore in depth what makes a resume truly stand out from all other CVS. During this session, we realized that it isn’t just about listing jobs; it's about crafting a compelling story and showing employers why you're different from other candidates. She guided us through real critiques, highlighting some common mistakes (some I had no idea about!) and how to correct them. The advice from Dr. Alu was very practical, such as using strong action verbs, properly organising your resume for each role, and making those key achievements eye-catching. By the end of this session, I was much clearer on how to make my own CV stand out from the rest.2. The second presentation was on the Interview Masterclass & Simulation with Mrs. Nah-Abiah A. : Mrs. Nah-Abiah Al-Hassan also provided us with some brilliant tips on preparing for an interview using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, and Result), applying soft skills (the behavior you exhibit to others), how to be yourself in a good manner when answering tricky questions, and presenting yourself confidently and flexibly. She also suggested preparing by drafting your likely questions and answers using generative AI. At the end of this section, we had the opportunity to engage in a live workshop simulation. We were allowed to practice answering questions on the spot and received friendly, immediate feedback from the organizers. We saw this as incredibly useful. Practicing like that makes the real thing feel so much less daunting.3. Ms. Afia Owusu-Forfie also guided us through the process of creating a LinkedIn account: Ms. Afia covered three essential tools in a single powerhouse session:LinkedIn: Ms. Afia Owusu-Forfie didn’t just guide us through creating a LinkedIn account, but she also showed us how to build a profile that actively works for us. This includes attracting opportunities, connecting with the right people, and showcasing our professional brand effectively. This helped me, as someone who already has a LinkedIn account but didn’t know how to use it, gain a better idea of how to make LinkedIn useful.Cover Letters: Ms. Afia Owusu-Forfie took us through how to write cover letters that effectively help secure a job by highlighting your ability to fill that role. This training also helped us learn how to connect our skills and knowledge directly to the specific job and company, making a compelling case right from the first line.Mind Maps: Ms. Afia Owusu-Forfie introduced us to mind maps as a visual thinking tool to help detail our career moves and even brainstorm skills. It’s a simple but powerful way to gain clarity on your goals and next steps. This training wasn't just theoretical; it was practical, hands-on, and immediately useful. Each session provided me with tangible tools and strategies I could apply straight away. Dr. Angela Azumah Alu, PhD , Mrs. Nah-Abiah A. , and Ms. Afia Owusu-Forfie are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about helping others succeed. They fostered a supportive environment where it was okay to ask questions and learn.I feel much more prepared and confident to handle my job search or the next step in my career. My CV is now sharper, my interview nerves are calmer, my LinkedIn is undergoing a major refresh, and I even have a mind map in development for my future plans. Many thanks once again to Ms. Afia Owusu-Forfie , Dr. Angela Azumah Alu, PhD , Mrs. Nah-Abiah A. and Prof. Daniel Obeng-Ofori for organizing such a valuable experience.
