Introduction

Before joining the Career Guidance Program organized by Coders Who Travel Inc. (also known as The Coders Who Travel Foundation ) , I had many ideas about what I wanted to become—but I didn’t know exactly how to prepare for it. This course helped me connect those ideas to real opportunities.

Throughout the sessions, we explored resume writing, professional communication, interviews, LinkedIn optimization, and how to research universities abroad. Every lesson provided something practical that I can use now and in the future.

About Afia Owusu-Forfie, Our Instructor

One of the highlights of this program was learning from Afia Owusu-Forfie , the co-founder of Coders Who Travel. She has a very warm teaching style that makes complex topics easy to understand. Her encouragement and real-life examples made the sessions both fun and eye-opening.

What Coders Who Travel Represents

Coders Who Travel is an initiative focused on helping young people access opportunities in technology and education. They aim to build confidence and introduce students to global possibilities, no matter what their background.

This program showed me how much guidance can change the way someone sees their future.

1. Building a Resume That Stands Out

Before this program, I didn’t know how much presentation mattered. I learned to:

  • Organize my information clearly
  • Focus on accomplishments instead of just listing tasks
  • Choose a clean, professional layout
  • Tailor my resume for different purposes

It made me realize that a resume is more than a document—it’s the first impression you give.

2. Crafting a Meaningful Cover Letter

The session on cover letters helped me understand how to speak confidently about myself in writing. We were taught to:

  • Start with a strong introduction
  • Explain why we’re interested in the role or program
  • Highlight skills that match the opportunity
  • Keep it short, honest, and professional

This made writing cover letters feel much less intimidating.

3. Handling Interviews with Confidence

Interviews used to make me nervous, but the course helped me view them differently.

Some helpful tips I learned include:

  • Practicing common questions
  • Maintaining calm body language
  • Sharing examples from my experience
  • Asking questions at the end of the interview

Now I know how to prepare properly and express myself clearly.

4. Developing a Professional LinkedIn Profile

I didn’t realize how important LinkedIn was until this course. We learned how to:

  • Write a headline that represents our interests
  • Create a professional summary
  • Add achievements, skills, and projects
  • Build a network by connecting with the right people

My profile now looks more polished and represents who I want to become.

5. Understanding University Applications Abroad

The session on international universities helped me think beyond rankings. I learned to consider:

  • Financial support and scholarship options
  • Campus culture
  • Academic programs that fit my interests
  • Support systems for international students

It helped me feel more confident about planning for further studies.
