I am Edna Amen Ekua Afful. I have been a trainee and a student at Coders Who Travel for about 6 weeks now. I am highly interested in technology and software development. Through the Coders Who Travel training program and my role in my school’s robotics team, I have grown to appreciate the opportunity to learn practical skills and work with others.
My goal has been to grow my technical abilities while developing confidence, leadership, and problem-solving skills. I actively participate during sessions, complete assignments and tasks, and take the lead when needed, since it helps me and my teammates understand a concept.
I also take responsibility for improving myself by researching, practicing, and asking questions. Through the Coders Who Travel, the efforts have helped me build a better version of myself. I have developed strong teamwork habits, clear communication skills, and a better understanding of resumes, blogs, interviews, and cover letters.
First of all, I’ll talk about the founder of the new family I've started, Coders Who Travel. Afia Owusu-Forfie is a Ghanaian-American computer scientist, statistician, and data analytics consultant. She has worked in the United States with major organizations and used her skills to build both a professional career and a social-impact mission.
She is also the Founder of Coders Who Travel Inc. (also known as The Coders Who Travel Foundation ). This nonprofit connects experienced tech professionals around the world with young people in Africa who want to learn programming, analytics, and career development.
What makes her unique is that she combines tech, education, leadership, and creativity. She is a good teacher, and she’s also a singer and writer to inspire young people.
CREATING YOUR RESUME
On Coders Who Travel, I have gotten to learn about how to build a very good resume. I was allowed to build my own resume, and I received an incredible review and feedback from Afia, Angela Azumah Alu, PhD , and Nah-Abiah A. . One key note I will always carry along with me is “a resume must be clear, consistent, and professional because your presentation tells a lot about you. To make your resume professional and confident, you must avoid using “I” in sentences; instead, use words such; “Developed, Designed, etc.”
INTERVIEW SKILLS TO DEVELOP
At the beginning, I was wondering what an interview session could ever be. I told myself that undergoing interview sessions is only for employees, but I gained more concerning the concept I had in my head. Interviews are not for specific people; you could go on shows as a CEO and yet be interviewed. One thing I will forever remember from mastering professional interview sessions is to learn how to present myself confidently and clearly during interviews.
THE STAR METHOD.
The STAR method = Situation - Task - Action - Result.
After learning the STAR method, I have developed confidence and professionalism in presenting myself. The STAR method helps me talk about my experiences clearly and professionally. The S-Situation talks about describing your background or context. The T- Task talks about explaining your role or responsibility. The A- Action talks about describing what you personally do with the task you have. The R- Result talks about the outcome of the action you took concerning the task you have.
COVER LETTER WRITING
A cover is a short, personalised letter that explains
● Why do you want the position
● Why you’re a good fit
● What skills and experiences do you have that match the role
● Why you should be chosen
A cover letter is more personal than a resume. It allows you to speak in sentences, express your motivation, and highlight the best parts of your background.
HOW CODERS WHO TRAVEL HAVE HELPED ME BUILD AN AMAZING LINKEDIN PROFILE.
One of the most valuable things I’ve learned during my time with Coders Who Travel is how to build a strong and professional LinkedIn presence. Before joining the program, I didn’t fully understand how important LinkedIn was for students, especially those interested in technology, internships, and global opportunities. But Coders Who Travel changed that for me.
Through the sessions and coaching, I learned how to:
Coders Who Travel taught me how to write a clear headline, choose the right profile photo, and share my skills in a way that represents who I am. I learned that LinkedIn is more than just an online CV — it’s your digital identity.
Instead of listing random information, I learned how to explain my interests, goals, and experiences in a structured way. This helped me express my passion for leadership, teaching, programming, and robotics.
I learned how to highlight my projects, volunteer work, certificates, and leadership experience in a way that attracts opportunities. I now understand how to make my accomplishments stand out.
Coders Who Travel guided me on how to connect with mentors, professionals, and other learners. I discovered how valuable networking can be and how one connection can change your entire career path.
Most importantly, I learned how to share my learning journey. Whether it’s an achievement, a project, or something new I discovered, I now know how to turn my experiences into posts that inspire others and grow my visibility.
CONCLUSION
My journey with Coders Who Travel has been truly transformative. From learning how to build a strong resume and craft compelling cover letters, to mastering interview skills and the STAR method, and even creating a professional LinkedIn profile, every lesson has equipped me with practical tools that go beyond the classroom.
I have not only gained skills that will help me in future internships and opportunities, but I have also learned how to present myself confidently and connect with mentors and peers in meaningful ways.
For anyone looking to grow as a coder, a student, or a professional, Coders Who Travel shows that learning is not just about coding — it’s about preparing yourself to succeed in the real world. I am grateful for the experience, and I am inspired to continue applying what I’ve learned while helping others on their own journeys.
