Before joining the career training program organized by Coders Who Travel Inc, I really had a tough time deciding on what I wanted to become and how to approach it. This program has helped me gain more ideas to gain more opportunities.

Have You Ever Heard of Coders Who Travel Inc?

Coders Who Travel Inc is a non-profit organization that’s changing how young people see technology and their careers. It is founded by a Ghanaian woman known as Afia Owusu-Forfie, who is a statistician, computer scientist and a data analytics consultant. She has worked in the United States with major organizations. She has a way of breaking down complex ideas into bite sized lessons. Her encouragement makes lessons feel real and engaging.

Career Guidance

Coders Who Travel is not just about coding as the name suggests, it also runs career training programs that teach practical skills we don’t learn at school.

‎

Building a Resume

Before CWT, I thought a Resume was just for university graduates. Now I know it isn’t, and even as an SHS student can build one. I learned to:

  • Keep it concise
  • Proofread when done
  • Keep it organized
  • Not to include irrelevant information

‎

Interview Tips

I used to think interviews were just about answering questions. CTW taught me that its about telling your story. I learned to:

  • Be Confident
  • Practice before the interview
  • Listen retentively
  • Ask questions

‎

Developing a Professional LinkedIn Profile

I didn’t know SHS students could even have LinkedIn. But CTW taught me that it’s like a digital CV that recruiters check. I learned how to:

  • Create a simple profile
  • Build a network by connecting with people
  • Showcase my achievements

‎

Creating a Cover Letter

I used to think that a cover letter was just another CV. CTW taught me that it’s a sales pitch to why I am a good fit. I was taught to:

  • Highlight skills that match my opportunities
  • Keep it short and professional
  • Be honest

‎

Mind Map

This was new to me. CWT helped me understand the concept and aided in creating one.

‎

Overall Impact

Overall, CWT has been an eye-opening experience that has taught me a lot of practical skills I can use in the near future. I have been taught how to present myself professionally, manage my time and communicate effectively. CWT has not only taught me but has made me discover more about myself.
